Nathalie's images are very aesthetic

In the photos of the dead animals Nathalie is searching for the impossible; making a lively connection with the dead. In the series Prey she uses the presents brought home by her cats. The positioning at eye level, makes them feel equal to us. By using little tricks such as opening the eyes, a drop of glycerine or a warm coloured light, the dead becomes more alive.

In the series Feathers photos, the model is a dead pigeon that Nathalie found in an abandoned building where she was preparing an art event. Because the pigeon was ringed, the worried owner was easily found. After the photoshoot Nathalie brought the pigeon back to his home where they buried the bird under the cherry tree in the garden.

For the photo’s In the series The Runner, Sunken and In the series Pas de Deux the animals are placed in a small fish tank filled with water. Nathalie shoots the photos through the glass, at eye level. The water gives volume to the feathers of the birds like a soft breeze. Even though you know they are obviously dead, the connection is made.

In In the series Entangled, garden worms are placed on a mirror in the fish tank. The water makes them curl up together like a knot of rope, creating a surreal image.

We are all familiar with photography. From the portrait photo in our passport, the framed photos on the side-table to the camara on our phone. We are surrounded with photos all the time. We all know how to use, read and interpret them. Most of us even know how to manipulate photos one way or the other. Therefor photography is probably the most direct and critical media used in art.

A photo is an instant registration of reality. It frames a viewpoint, capturing a moment in time on a still image. With care and attention, Nathalie creates the scene in which she places her subject to photograph. Aside for some little tricks, Nathalie keeps post-processing and manipulation of the image to a minimum. The photos are real and honest and undoubtably speak to us about transience; the beauty of decay.

Nathalie photographed the series Hands especially for the installation Tribute to the wrinkle, which you can find in the chapter Installations. The Hands photos are shot with a small camera so that the seniors portrayed were not intimidated and held their natural pose for the photo.

Hands can tell us a lot; skin, nails, jewellery all have a history. A character shines through in the way the hands relax on ones lap, in the way they hold themselves. Maybe hands can tell us more than a face ever will.

Esperar (Waiting) is a candid photo from Nathalie’s own balcony. The story presented itself beautifully; the pose of the elderly, their clothes, the colours, the window, everything fits. In order not to disturb the scene, Nathalie used a small camera.
